"We're excited about "The Side Effect" EP as a compilation of songs that are special to us but haven't had the attention they deserve. "The Side Effect" is one of our favorite songs from the self-titled recording sessions because we really stretched ourselves in it. We were able to create some great moments in that song. Although it didn't fit into what we were doing on the self-titled album, we always hoped to release an EP anchored by that song. Unnatural Ceilings was almost the title of the self-titled album, but after multiple sequences for the record, it just didn't fit into the final mix even though it's a strong song for us. When Deas Vail formed in 2003, Blaylock says the goal was to back his own acoustic singer-songwriter project, with no bigger picture in mind than friends having fun. "We didn't think we'd be doing it professionally years later," he says. But three albums and three EPs later the band has proven themselves as a formidably tight unit. "The rapport and chemistry has gotten deeper," he says. "We've gotten braver, we weren't in any boxes and we could just do whatever we wanted. Be experimental and try different ideas, move forward and do new things. We're still growing, still writing better songs."
